Making the decision to seek counseling and find a counselor can be difficult for many people. If you are not familiar with the counseling process it may feel intimidating. In order to reduce any anxiety you may have about this, we want to give you a sense of what you might expect before you get started.
Typically, in the first session, you and your counselor will be getting to know each other. Your counselor will probably inquire about what brings you to counseling and what you are hoping to achieve. Counselors understand that it can be difficult for some people to share their thoughts and feelings and are committed to providing a safe and non-judgmental space for you to enter into this conversation.
There will be some required paperwork. Some counselors prefer you to fill out the paperwork prior to your session and others may prefer to go over it with you in person. After your initial session, you and your counselor will determine the best course of treatment, but typically you will meet with your counselor for weekly sessions that run around 50 minutes.
